August is a big month for Lighthouses, and Twin Lights has been celebrating all month long!
Here's a quick recap incase you've missed the festivities:
August 7th was National Lighthouse Day
August 18th and 19th was International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend
To celebrate International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, Twin Lights partnered with the New Jersey Emergency Communications Team to host our 2nd Annual Twin Lights on the Air event!
Amateur radio operators and Morse code masters set up around site with their antennas and telegraph keys, teaching visitors about radio and wireless communication. The goal was to connect with as many other lighthouses and lightships as possible!
Over the course of the day, we established 218 connections worldwide! Some of our farthest connections were Alaska, Sweden, Germany, Italy and Canada !
Twin Lights state interpreters kept track of every connection made on a map, and it got pretty crowded!
Interpreters also set up interactive Morse code stations, offering visitors the opportunity to try it out themselves and to learn about Guglielmo Marconi, the father of wireless transmission, and his connections to Twin Lights.
